Polyvagal Theory explains why your nervous system reacts the way it does and why you sometimes can’t “think your way” out of stress, shutdown, or overwhelm. It was developed by Dr Stephen Porges, who discovered that the vagus nerve plays a central role in how we feel safe, connected, or threatened.
In simple terms, Polyvagal Theory shows that your body has three main states. There’s the connected state where you feel calm, open, grounded, and able to engage. There’s the fight–flight state where your body shifts into survival mode, sharpening your senses and speeding everything up. Then there’s the freeze state where things switch off and you feel disconnected, numb, or depleted. Your system moves between these automatically depending on how safe or unsafe your body feels, not what your mind thinks.
This matters because many people blame themselves for being “too emotional,” “too anxious,” or “too shut down,” when their body is simply protecting them. The vagus nerve is always scanning for cues of safety or danger, and your reactions are often old survival strategies, not personal failings.
Polyvagal Theory gives you a practical map of your inner world. When you understand your state, you can work with your body rather than fighting it. This is where healing becomes possible. You learn how to shift from survival into safety, regulation, and connection. You build a nervous system that trusts you again.

We start very gently and you're always in control. You can modify any practice to suit your comfort level, and I provide alternatives for different needs.
Plan for about 1 hour per week - 30-45 minutes for the teaching video and 10-15 minutes for practice. You can break this up however works for you.
This course is specifically designed for trauma survivors. All practices are trauma-informed and include safety protocols. However, if you're currently in crisis, please seek professional support first.
